Saturday was the day of the “big show”! Since I was there to review the entire thing, I showed up right after “doors open” time, at 2:15pm. Unfortunately there was still a line outside — one of the bands was still doing sound check and they weren’t letting people into the amphitheater just yet. It was already a very hot afternoon and I was starting to regret my decision to wear a black top with jeans.

The doors finally opened a little after 2:30pm. I bought a bottle of water and went straight for my seat in front row. I’d never been in the reserved seating section at Booth Amphitheater, much less front row, so I was pretty excited to see where I would be sitting!

The seats were awesome. They were pretty close to the end of the right side of the stage, but we were still in front of the stage so it was all good. I walked over to the center section to check out the view we’d have for the Styx show in June – OMGAMAZING. I hung out there for a little bit on my own. Hal hadn’t shown up yet (he was the photographer for the event) and Tim, who’d be sitting next to me, wasn’t going to arrive until the end of the night for Cheap Trick.

I happened to recognize Brenda, the media organizer, and went up just to say hi. “I have a media pass for you!” she said. Seriously? I guess I wasn’t expecting one since I had tickets to this show already. She walked me up to the box office and got me my folder with info about the show, and a shiny new pass!

I bought a $7 chocolate milkshake before going back to my seat. For the record, it wasn’t worth $7. But it was still good. By this time the Georgia Satellites had started their set!

The Georgia Satellites are a southern rock band. I may have heard of them but had no idea what songs they played. Turns out their big hit was Keep Your Hands To Yourself, which I’ve definitely heard before. They were good performers. Nothing spectacular stuck out to me but it was clear to me that they were very talented. Their closing song was a cover of The Swinging Blue Jean’s Hippy Hippy Shake.

Hal had shown up during the last few songs of the Satellites’ set. When the set ended, I asked him if he knew where I could find Brenda. I was told she might be able to get set lists for me. Hal took me around the amphitheater and we even journeyed back stage in search of Brenda (for me) and food (for Hal). We didn’t end up getting either :(

We hung out and I chatted with a couple of musicians in the tent while Hal made some phone calls and smoked a cigarette. I heard the Atlanta Rhythm Section start up and I knew I’d better get back to my seat so I could properly review them too!

We are the Dream Police! Long live Cheap Trick, the greatest American rock band. The American Beatles.
