When I found out that Styx was returning to the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach for the first time in 2 years, it took approximately .5 seconds to decide I was going. Despite my efforts to find someone in Raleigh to join me for the trip, I ended up going alone. But hey…I did it alone last time, and to be honest I was looking forward to doing it again. After all, there would be some cool Styx fans waiting there for me when I got there!
I rolled into town around 2:30pm and dropped by the House of Blues to pick up my Crash the Barricade voucher. After that I went to my hotel so that I could check in before heading back to the venue. As I waited in line in the lobby, the man in front of me spoke quietly about a group reservation for that night. I heard the name Hootie mumbled a couple of times and my interest was piqued.
Anyway I wasn’t able to check into my room until around 3:30, so in the meantime I checked out the grounds of the resort. It was really pretty; I walked down to the shore and grabbed a bite to eat at the alcohol / snack bar which overlooked the ocean. I chatted with the bartender for awhile, and he looked into whether or not Darius Rucker was actually checking in that night. Turns out it was not him, but his road crew. Oh well, I was close to being right
I finally got to check in to my room around 3:30. By the time I got settled in, it was time to leave for the show! The doors for the Crash the Barricade party didn’t start until 6:00, but I got in line to get in around 4:15. Why? Anyone who knows me wouldn’t ask that question
I’m a pretty anal retentive person in all aspects of my life, but none more so than Styx shows. I was taking NO chances of being late or far from the stage
So when I said that I got “in line,” what I really should have said was that I “became the line.” For about a half hour I sat there like a loser at the gate, wishing someone would show up. Anyone! I thought I’d seen Angela and Dixie arrive, but when they didn’t show up at the gate I second guessed myself. Around 4:45, Taylor and her friend Kelsey rounded the corner. Finally, some people I knew! Right behind them was Taylor’s mom and Dixie and Angela. Apparently they’d all been waiting at another entrance. Charlene and Janet arrived later and we were all geared up to get inside.
